The UN Charter as a Compass for Today’s Global Challenges

Coidaura Terra was present at the panel discussion “80 Years of the UN Charter: Reflections on Multilateralism and Parliamentary Democracy,”held at the Chamber of Deputies—an inclusive space for dialogue that reaffirmed Mexico’s role in peacebuilding, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

During the event, speakers underscored the continued relevance of the United Nations Charter, signed in 1945, as an ethical and political framework for collective action. In this context, peace was emphasized not merely as the absence of conflict, but as the presence of justice, equity, and respect for human rights.

The discussion brought together representatives from key United Nations system agencies, including UNFPA, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNDP Mexico, ECLAC, UNODC, UNICEF, and UNESCO, along with members of Congress, academics, and representatives from Mexico’s Ministry of Congress, academics, and representatives from Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Peter Grohmann, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mexico, noted that the Charter continues to serve as an ethical and political compass for addressing today’s global challenges.

Among the data presented were figures illustrating the scale of global challenges: more than 120 million people displaced worldwide—an increase of historic proportions; in Mexico, 60% of productive units are led by women,in part as a result of migration; and the contribution of migrants reaching up to 7% of global GDP.

The panel also addressed priority structural challenges, including food security; the equitable and sustainable management of water resources; public health challenges; the transition to clean and efficient energy systems; the gender gap in access to land and financing in rural areas; and the impact of human mobility on human rights and economic development.

Eighty years after the signing of the UN Charter, participants highlighted the urgency of responding to an unprecedented global crisis of violence and displacement, rethinking productive systems through the lens of equity and climate resilience, and strengthening international cooperation so that it translates into concrete public policies at the local level. The importance of incorporating the voices of women, migrants, and rural communities into decision-making processes was also emphasized, as was the need to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy as a bridge between global agreements and everyday realities.

Coidaura Terra’s participation in this panel discussion reaffirms its commitment to remaining closely engaged with spaces for reflection that promote multilateralism, democracy, and cooperation as key tools for building peace, justice, and sustainability.
